Growing Up With Books by Kate DiCamillo and J.K. Rowling

By: Jordan Young, Grade 5
Rockport Elementary School

Growing up I loved reading.  When I was a year old, my mom would read stories to me before I went to bed.  As I started getting to the age of 3, I was reading easy books.  I loved getting books at the library.  A little after I turned 4, I started reading Harry Potter.

One of my favorite quotes is “The truth.”  Dumbledore sighed, “Is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with great caution.” – J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

A few months after I turned 6, I moved to Rockport.  At that time, I was in love with reading Kate DiCamillo’s The Tale of Despereaux.
One of my favorite quotes from that book is, “Stories are light. Light is precious in a world so dark. Begin at the beginning. Tell a Gregory story. Make some light.” – Kate DiCamillo, The Tale of Despereaux

Those two books and their authors have enlightened my world and made me think the unthinkable.
