My Life As a Reader

My Life as a Reader

By: Phin Kelly, Grade 5
Rockport Elementary School

Ever since I can remember, my dad read to me and my younger siblings. I wanted to know what the letter and sounds meant. By the time I was 4 1/2 or 5 years old, I could read.

One time, my mom had a meeting with a friend and I pulled out Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss and I surprised myself by reading 75% of the words (such as car or egg).

I now love reading and usually stay up until 11:00 pm reading big novels such as
Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan or Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland.

"Look I didn't want to be a half-blood. If you're reading this,
I might be one. My advice is: Close this book right now. "
Percy Jackson and The Lightening Thief

  1. I always loved reading as a kid, too, and I still do. Like you, I always at least read before bedtime, but I also take my Kindle almost everywhere and take any opportunity that I can. Keep reading!!

  3. Hi Phin- I always read to my own children from a very young age. They grew up loving books and it helped them as they worked their way through elementary school. I often stay up too late reading! Even though I do not have loads of time on my hands, I try to spend at least 30 minutes reading a book for pleasure every day. It's so nice to hear about your love of reading!

  4. Phin loved your story. One of my favorite memories about my own kids is reading to them before bed. It's nice to know that was the start of your joy for reading too. And cudos to dad for getting some credit.
