Book Reviews by RES students! Look here for great recommendations and ideas!

The Willoughbys by Lois Lowry
Every elementary school library has books that "fly" off the shelves  - those titles that are in circulation constantly.
Titles in our library that fall in this category are Elephant and Piggie,  Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and the I Survived series. These are great choices, but at the same time, our library contains high quality "hidden treasures" that sit on the shelves and are sometimes overlooked for the more trendy titles. A group of dedicated grade five readers decided to tackle this problem head on by selecting a title from this group and agreeing to provide a book review. We are delighted to post that first review here!

The Willoughbys
by Lois Lowry
Review by Trinity, grade 5

My book review on The Willoughby's is very mixed. I thought that times it was very interesting and hooking, but at other times it was boring and I felt as if I was reading something bland and unimportant. The story had a very bad ending, though. I think this is because in my eyes what happened was very abrupt, and since there was nothing more, I was shocked! I thought that the moral of the story was unclear and had no point. I thought it had a bit too much romance but other than that this book was stupendous!

Interested in this book? Here's a blurb from Book List: , "*Starred Review* The ever-versatile Lowry offers what she calls an “old-fashioned story,” complete with stock elements such as a baby left on a doorstep and a nanny who transforms her initially ill-behaved charges. Sly humor and a certain deadpan zaniness give literary conventions an ironic twist, with hilarious results.

Other books the group is reading...
Beautiful Blue World, Suzanne LaFleur
Last in a Long Line of Rebels by Lisa Lewis Tyre
School of Good and Evil by Soman Chainani

  1. Thanks for such an honest and well-written review, Trinity! I haven't read The Willoughbys, but Lois Lowry wrote one of my favorite books: The Giver. If you're looking to give the author another try, I recommend it!
